We Can-struction is a unique program that brings teams and participants together in a fun competition, unique art show and most importantly, donates much needed food to local foodbanks.
WE Can-struction Facts
“The most important benefit we get from participating in We Can-struction is the opportunity to raise awareness of the role the food bank plays in our community and the chance to remind people in a fun and creative way that it really does not take much more than a little thoughtfulness and generosity now and then to make a huge difference in the lives of people we live and work with.”
David deMontigny, Faculty Advisor at University of Regina
The event involves creativity, collaboration planning, and celebration as the teams build and display their designs. The sculptures are made entirely out of full cans and boxes of food. After the structures are built, the creations go on display to the participants as a giant art exhibition.
At the end of the sculptures are donated to local hunger relief organizations. The sculptures can remain on display until the end the meeting or beyond.
How it works
The participants can divide themselves into teams by work-group, department or people forming a team on their own. The groups can use the can goods they bring into the center.
The building groups are given time to plan their structure, develop a materials list. Once the plan is developed the teams the teams can proceed with the process.
The teams are provided; Cardboard, PVC pipe, tape, construction paper, cutting devices and various materials and supplies. The sculptures are not solid cans. Various materials can be used as the base. The base materials are recyclable so nothing goes to waste.
Teams are given time to build their masterpiece. The teams do not need to build a super structure, they can build a smaller meaningful piece of art for display.
Awards are given to teams for several categories to give a feeling of an art show.
Once completed and judged the food items will be boxed and presented to a local food bank.
The cost of the program includes: Event Coordination, Event Staff, Materials and Supplies, Sound and Music, Awards for the Art Expo.
